Location:Pittsburgh, PA
Trail Name:Settlers Cabin
Park Name:Settlers Cabin
Description:
The initial trail from the start goes about 4 miles of flat to rolling single track. Watch for hikers on this part, and avoid the temptation to take trails to the left and right. You will reach a crossroads, turning right uphill loops you back to the middle of the trail you were just on. Go straight across the road. You can go straight ahead up the hill or left over some whoop-de-dos across the creek (bog) and up a hill. Some of this has to be walked. At the top you have many options down, all are fun. There is much more here - about 18-20 miles of trails - but describing it all would take too long. All of this is single-track. Two hills bisect the park and should provide a frame of reference. At the tops you can see a water tower which is near the road. If you get lost ride in that direction.
Major Highlight(s):
Many: The first part, though flat, is filled with big holes. If it's dry, get some air. If its wet, be careful, some of them are deeper than they look. Also a couple of stream crossings and open fields where downhill speeds reach about 35 mph (on my unsuspended Trek).
How To Get there:
Take 279 South out of Pittsburgh. Look for signs for Settlers Cabin park before reaching Robinson Township. Follow signs at exit. Once inside park follow signs to tennis courts and park. Just to the left of tennis courts is a field with a path. The trails start here.

Trail Name:Moraine
Park Name:Moraine State Park
Description:
Extremely rocky and super technical with a longish climb, and a technical boulder field. Excellant technical singletrack.
Major Highlight(s):
It makes you a super technical rider to be able to ride this course with any kind of speed, makes for a very challenging race course.
How To Get there:
Just follow the signs to the Mountain bike trail

Trail Name:Seven Springs/Hidden Valley
Park Name:Seven Springs/Hidden Valley
Description:
Typical ski resort riding. Includes roads, singletrack, cross country trails, and lots of climbing. Both resorts have bike rental shops with maps and info, but Hidden Valley guys are much better and have maps to surrounding area as well. Hidden Valley maintains a race circuit of about 8 miles. Seven Springs trails have less maintenence. Too many other trails to summarize. Of note: this area is very rocky, I highly recommend full suspension or at least a shock. I have ridden these trails 5 or 6 times on a rigid bike, and it hurts. Also, at the end of the airstrip at Seven Springs there are a number of trails I have never ridden.
Major Highlight(s):
Best Ride (25 miles). Park at Hidden Valley and get maps. Ride from Hidden Valley to Seven Springs on fire roads and through single track of Forbes State Forest (HV has maps). Ride race course at Seven Springs. Ride back to Hidden Valley, but turn right as you exit Forbes State Forest. This puts you at the top of the Hidden Valley race course. Enjoy!
How To Get there:
PA turnpike about 30 minutes east of Pittsburgh. Ample signage to these two ski resorts.

Location:State College, PA
Trail Name:Ross Trail
Park Name:Rothrock State Forest
Description:
The Ross Trail is like many others in Rothrock: a diverse blend of fast, smooth singletrack with plenty of technical. Rocks, logs and chutes push this to a double black rating. Drop the Johnson Trail, right next to it, for east coast extreme.
Major Highlight(s):
Maintained by the locals, this ridgetop singletrack drops 1000 feet vertical over two miles of sweet trail. A 4 mile dirt road climb to the trailhead or just drive there. Bring the big guns if you have 'em.
How To Get there:
Enter the forest at Tussey Mountain Ski Area three miles from the Penn State Campus. Get the Purple Lizard Adventure Map downtown at the bicycle shop. It has all the singletrack on it - best damn map I've ever seen.
State College

Location:Wexford, PA
Trail Name:North Park Equestrian Trail
Park Name:North Park
Description:
The trail is approx. 12+ miles of single track w/ some jeep trails. Some tech. sections but otherwise a well maintained trail with several fast downhill sections. Stay on the horse/x-ski trails. Park Station has a map posted of the trails. Watch for horses and hikers, but Mt. Bikers far out number the others.
Major Highlight(s):
It's not my favorite trail, but it is one of the best trails in the North Hills.
How To Get there:
I-79 to SR-910 (Orange Belt). East on SR-910 for Approx. 5 miles, Look for the signs that say "North Park" and turn right. Park by the skating rink, go up the hill (on the road) by the parking lot and the trail is on the left hand side of the road.
